Hello everyone. Are you aware just how much dogs rule this great country? Ok, maybe not the country, but I’m sure we rule the houses we live in. We all have jobs. It’s time the four-legged kids got a raise! In case you aren’t familiar with your pet’s job description, I’ll help you out. Our duties are very important, yet quite simple:
Warming laps whenever possible, reducing blood pressure in humans simply by being there, helping you have that kindred feeling with other “pet people,” turning household objects — like shoes — into toys so you don’t have to buy them, making you aware of squirrels, serve as your alarm clock, displaying daring acrobatic feats that make you proud, such as catching that Frisbee (we get points for effort), keeping cats on their toes, inspiring poets and playwrights, teaching you how to see the humor in everything, allowing humans to indulge their desire to really spoil someone, making homes warmer and more inviting, making the world your playground, whenever you’re in trouble or in danger of looking silly, we cock our head to one side and look cute so you aren’t alone, we show you how to lick your wounds and go on, we open the hearts of everyone we meet simply by a greeting, we never judge you or think you’re wrong about anything, and most importantly, we love unconditionally and protect you from harm.
When you think about it, we probably have the most important job in the household. No matter what kind of day Mom has had, I can always count on her to rub my belly and throw a ball in the back yard. She always tells me she loves me and gives me lots of kisses and hugs, even when I haven’t been on my best behavior. This is how I know I’ve done my job well. My payment is lots of attention, cuddles, kisses and hugs, extra treats when I do things the first time, and a home where I’ll be loved and taken care of the rest of my life. Maybe it’s time for you to give your pets a raise. Take them for a longer walk, spend quiet time with them, read them a story (yes, we do listen and we understand most of what you say), tell them about your day and let them chase all your worries away. After all, it’s what we do best!
With the holidays behind us, I want to remind all the four legged kids out there to stay on their best behavior. Humans are more rushed and life will be more hectic so you’ll need to give them more space. Have a little bit more patience with your people. They will appreciate you more for it.
Have a great holiday season, everyone!
